About Wereldmuseum Leiden

1 museum, 3 locations

As of October 4, 2023, the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam, Afrika Museum in Berg en Dal, Museum Volkenkunde in Leiden and the Wereldmuseum Rotterdam merged together under one name: Wereldmuseum. Wereldmuseum Berg en Dal (formerly Afrika Museum) is closed as of November 2023.

We believe that the world has no center but is one vast network where everything influences each other. We explore the world around us and try to understand it better through our collection and exhibitions. At all locations of the Wereldmuseum, the focus is on themes that influence our daily lives.

Closer than you think

At the locations of the Wereldmuseum, you will learn more about how people live worldwide and how people are shaped by the world. Past and present. Because with more knowledge of the relationship between past and present, you can better understand the world of today. The Wereldmuseum encourages thinking about what it means to be human. What is our connection with the world around us? How do we relate to each other?

Wereldmuseum Leiden

With its scientific orientation and collecting history, Wereldmuseum Leiden focuses on global cultural histories. The themes you see here include religion or indigenous worlds and their struggle for independence and restoration of historical injustice. The exhibitions encourage us to reflect on what it means to be human, what our connection is with the world around us, and how we relate to each other.
