Museum Volkenkunde, together with the Afrika Museum and Tropenmuseum, is part of the Nationaal Museum van Wereldculturen (NMVW, National Museum of World Cultures) since 2014. The Wereldmuseum in Rotterdam became a partner of the NMVW in May 2017 and shares both the collection and mission of the NMVW.
General Director / Content Director -
Marieke van Bommel & Wayne Modest
The Board of Directors is jointly responsible for the museum. The general director focuses mainly on governmental and administrative elements. The content director focuses mainly on the elements regarding content and societal responsibilities.
Head of Research and Collections -
Research and Collections drives forward all areas to do with intellectual access to collection, including research strategy, projects and programmes, collections interpretation and development. This includes policy questions such as provenance and the return of cultural objects.
Head of Programmes -
Programming drives forward strategy and development of exhibitions, public programmes and education.
Head of Delivery and Realisation -
Delivery and Realisation drives forward the areas of projects, collection management and IT and initiates operational innovation.
Head of Operations and Services -
Operation and Services drives forward all areas that support the primary museal tasks and public facilities including the shops, restaurants and hospitality services.
Head of Public and Partnerships a.i. -
Daan van Leeuwen
Public and Partnerships drives forward the relations with diverse audiences, governments, other museums and sponsors. With community building and engagement as core function, the department seeks to understand how our museum can better identify, recognize, acknowledge and take into account the needs of specific (potential) target groups and partners. Furthermore it drives forward new business models and ways to reach audiences via online media.
